Porcelain Vase Restoraiton — Severe Damage

Porcelain vases, with their delicate beauty, are timeless pieces that often carry sentimental and historical value. Unfortunately, accidents happen. Thank God Luba and her team are here to save the day.  In this post, we’ll take a closer look at the intricate steps involved in the restoration process.

Before we even went to Step 1, we had to tape all the pieces to show the client how many pieces were missing.

Step 1: Gluing and Bonding the Existing Pieces The first crucial step in porcelain restoration is carefully gluing and bonding the existing pieces back together. Highly skilled artisans use specialized adhesives that are both strong and invisible when dried. This step requires precision and patience, as aligning the pieces perfectly is essential for a seamless restoration.

Step 2: Sculpting Additional Fragments for a Perfect Fit In cases where pieces are missing or too damaged to be glued back together, skilled artisans embark on the delicate task of sculpting additional fragments. Using fine porcelain clay, they meticulously recreate the missing parts, ensuring that the new elements seamlessly blend with the original structure. This sculpting process demands a deep understanding of the vase’s design and style to maintain its authenticity.

Step 3: Matching and Replicating the Color and Pattern/Design A true porcelain restoration artist possesses an eye for detail and an innate ability to match colors and replicate intricate patterns. Using a combination of pigments, the artisan carefully matches the hues of the original vase, ensuring that the restored portions seamlessly integrate with the existing surface. This step is critical to achieving a cohesive and natural appearance in the final result.

Step 4: Airbrushing To achieve a flawless finish, airbrushing is often employed in the restoration process. This technique allows the artisan to apply thin, even layers of color, blending the restored areas with the rest of the vase. Airbrushing is a meticulous process that requires a steady hand and a deep understanding of the porcelain’s characteristics.

Step 5: Glazing The final touch in the porcelain restoration process is the application of a protective glaze. This not only enhances the vibrancy of the colors but also provides a protective layer that preserves the restored surface. The choice of glaze is crucial, as it must be compatible with the original glaze used on the vase to maintain its authentic look and feel.
